Why Spaying/Neutering is So Important

While any surgical procedure can be a cause of concern for a pet’s owner, spaying or neutering your pet is an exceptionally low-risk procedure that offers several benefits, the most important of which is to your pet’s health.

Simply spaying or neutering your pet not only improves its health and quality of life, it can even help it live longer. In fact, altering a dog can extend its life by an average of 1 to 3 years. For cats, it can add another 3 to 5 years. By spaying or neutering your pet, you’ll be reducing or eliminating its risk of mammary gland tumors/cancer, prostate cancer, perianal tumors, pyometra, and uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers.

Another benefit of spaying and neutering is the fact that it positively impacts the pet’s behavior. It reduces or eliminates the pet’s urge to roam and thus dramatically lowers its risk of contracting diseases or getting hurt. When you consider that 85% of dogs that are hit by cars are unaltered and that unaltered cats living outside live an average of two years less than neutered cats, spaying and neutering can really be considered a life or death decision.

Lastly, spaying and neutering plays a crucial role in controlling overpopulation. Cats and dogs go into heat as early as five months of age – sometimes earlier, and they can have litters several times a year. This causes an endless cycle of homeless animals. Altering pets not only helps control this overpopulation, it helps reduce euthanasia rates and moves us closer to being a no-kill nation.

At North Shore Animal League America, we offer everyone affordable spay/neuter services to keep their beloved lifelong companions in tip-top shape, as well as reduce pet overpopulation. Below is an outline of our spay and neuter fees.
