Why is it important to spay/neuter your pets?

Cats and dogs have the unique ability to reproduce several times a year. They can go into heat as early as five months of age – sometimes earlier, and they can have litters several times a year. That is why there is an endless cycle of homeless animals. Reducing this overpopulation will reduce euthanasia rates and move us closer to a no-kill nation.

Sterilization of your cat or dog will increase his/her chance of a longer and healthier life. Altering your canine friend will increase his life an average of 1 to 3 years, felines, 3 to 5 years. Altered animals have a very low to no risk of mammary gland tumors/cancer, prostate cancer, perianal tumors, pyometra, and uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers.

While it is a myth that spaying/neutering your pet will diminish their natural instincts, it will make them a better pet. It has been shown that altered pets have a reduced urge to roam and thus decreases the risk of contracting diseases or getting hurt. Surveys indicate that as many as 85% of dogs hit by cars are unaltered. Intact male cats living outside have been shown to live an average of two years less neutered cats.

At North Shore Animal League America we offer everyone affordable spay/neuter services to keep their beloved lifelong companions in tip-top shape, as well as reduce pet overpopulation.
