Although it’s always best to have your pets collar on with tags including your address, home phone number and cell phone number, microchipping your dog or cat can greatly increase the chances that they will be reunited with you if they are ever lost or stolen. A microchip containing the owner’s contact information can be read by any veterinarian or animal facility, and help reunite little Fido or Fluffy with their family.
Microchipping your pet is not only affordable, but it’s a simple procedure that can be done in your vet’s office. During the procedure, a tiny microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) is injected under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. The entire procedure takes only a minute to be completed, and no anesthesia is required.
HOW PET MICROCHIPPING WORKS
After the microchip is inserted, the chip’s unique identifier and your personal contact information is registered with a national pet recovery database. Should your pet wander away from home and be picked up and taken to a shelter or veterinarian’s office, a scanner is used to search for a microchip. If your pet is microchipped, the scanner will detect it and provide the user with your contact information and you will be contacted.
With animal microchipping technology, if your pet is ever lost, your chances of being reunited is greatly improved. In fact, according to AKC Reunite, “Pets with microchips are up to 20 times more likely to be reunited with their owners.”
