National Veterinary Technician Week, first celebrated in 1993, takes place the third week of October every year, and provides an opportunity to recognize the vital role our veterinary technicians play in ensuring the animals in our care receive the best possible medical care.
At North Shore Animal League America, we rescue thousands of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens every year. From across the country and around the world, animals are brought to our Port Washington, NY campus in need of a place to call home. Many are in need of urgent medical care. That is where the dedicated Veterinary Technicians at our Pet Health Centers play a vital role in our lifesaving mission.
What does a licensed veterinary technician do?
A vet tech has a variety of responsibilities when it comes to the care of the animals in our shelter, as well as those in our community who visit our Pet Health Centers. Considered the nurses of the veterinary world because of the individualized care they often provide to their patients; these dedicated men and women provide support in all aspects of patient care. From performing physical exams, running labs and monitoring vitals during surgery, to assisting on dental procedures, caring for patients post operatively, and administering medications. In addition, vet techs are often the first to identify symptoms or conditions that can improve the prognosis in our patients. They possess a thorough understanding of veterinary anatomy and physiology that allows our medical team to make accurate and informed decisions in all situations.
